    I want to challenge a deeply held belief in our industry, one that I once championed myself: the idea that more data is the answer. We've spent a fortune building vast data lakes of network telemetry, believing that if we could just collect everything, we would achieve a state of operational nirvana.

    The reality, however, feels less like nirvana and more like a recurring nightmare. Dashboards, events, and alerts burn out your best people, not because of a lack of data, but because of its overwhelming, context-free abundance. We didn't solve the visibility problem; we just buried it under an avalanche of noise. We’ve given our teams a library containing every book ever written but fired all the librarians. This is the paradox we've engineered: In our quest for total visibility, we have ironically made it harder to see.

    A lesson in intelligent ignorance

    This is not just a networking problem; it’s a fundamental challenge of intelligence itself. I was struck by a recent conversation with AI pioneer Yann LeCun. He argues that for AI to approach anything like human or animal intelligence, it must learn not just how to process information, but how to ignore it. A baby learns that an unsupported object will fall, not by memorizing the trajectory of every dust mote in the air, but by grasping the essential pattern and discarding the irrelevant details.     How does it achieve this? Through context. By understanding the entire, end-to-end service delivery path—from the user's device, across the chaotic wilderness of the internet, through the cloud provider's backbone, and all the way to the application itself—observability builds a world model of your services.

    With this contextual model, the system can make intelligent decisions about what matters and what can be safely ignored. It can understand that a 50% CPU spike on a redundant, non-critical access switch in an empty office is just noise. But it can also recognize that a subtle, 0.5% increase in packet loss on a specific ISP peering point is the critical signal that foretells a failure of your primary CRM application for an entire geographic area. This is not about simply correlating alerts; it's about understanding causality.

    From alert fatigue to actionable focus

    When your management platform learns what to ignore, it fundamentally transforms the role of your network operations team. The endless barrage of meaningless alerts ceases. An alert becomes a rare, but always significant event. The cognitive burden on your engineers is lifted. They are no longer data janitors, but strategic problem-solvers.

    This frees your most experienced people from the soul-crushing cycle of reactive firefighting. They can stop chasing ghosts and start architecting a more resilient future. This is how you address the skills gap—not by trying to hire more people to stare at more screens, but by empowering the experts you already have. You give them tools that amplify their intelligence instead of overwhelming their senses.

    We have mastered the science of collecting everything. The next, more difficult, step is to master the art of seeing almost nothing. The goal is a quieter, more focused operations center. If your current strategy is still based on the principle of "see everything, alert on everything," you don't have a visibility strategy—you have a noise generation strategy. It is time to embrace the art of seeing less to understand more.
