Monitoring Cohesity with DX Unified Infrastructure Management
Written by: Ashish Aggarwal
The Cohesity Data Platform consolidates backups, file shares, object stores, and data on a single web-scale data management platform. As a result, this platform helps reduce data sprawl and mass data fragmentation. The Cohesity platform allows teams to make their backup and unstructured data more productive for a range of efforts, including rapid app development, compliance, security, and analytics. This platform is popular in modern data centers since it helps maximize cluster capacity on premises, in the edge, and in public clouds.
DX Unified Infrastructure Management (DX UIM) provides a single, analytics-driven solution for proactively and efficiently managing modern cloud and hybrid IT infrastructures. DX UIM offers comprehensive infrastructure observability, featuring a portfolio of more than 120 technology monitoring probes. Given the fact that the Cohesity Data Platform solution is gaining traction in modern data centers, Broadcom has expanded DX UIM to include support for Cohesity, delivering a new, dedicated monitoring probe.
The Cohesity probe runs on a remote robot, without requiring teams to install agents on Cohesity nodes. With its market-leading, zero-touch Monitoring Configuration Service, DX UIM is easy to set up. In addition, the platform’s multi-cluster monitoring support delivers both great value and simplicity.
The Cohesity probe uses Representational State Transfer (REST) calls to Cohesity APIs. In addition, it uses the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to collect metrics, including for fan speeds and power supplies, from nodes on the Cohesity cluster. DX UIM is the only solution that leverages both RESTful APIs and SNMP to provide the most comprehensive monitoring coverage of the Cohesity platform.
Figure 1: DX UIM uses RESTful APIs and SNMP to ingest data from the Cohesity Data Platform.
The Cohesity monitoring probe handles all the common monitoring and data collection tasks on the Cohesity cluster. At customizable intervals, the probe collects and stores the data and information from the monitored system. The probe generates alarms when specified thresholds are breached.
Administrators can view metrics, alarms, and reports by using this probe on the Operator Console, which is the DX UIM platform’s graphical user interface. In this way, DX UIM offers contextual navigation and a single pane-of-glass view of the complete data center.
In conjunction with DX Operational Intelligence, IT teams can create converged application, network, and infrastructure monitoring for full-stack observability of all the business services they support. The solution delivers topology-driven service analytics for quick visual triage. With the solution’s capacity analytics and predictive insights, which are based on machine-learning algorithms, storage administrators can manage their IT resources more effectively, so they can ensure that resources are sized correctly to meet current and future business needs. Other IT operations professionals, such as Site Reliability Engineers (SREs), can optimize the performance and efficiency of existing resources and more intelligently plan for and justify any financial investments.
DX UIM can help teams monitor quality-of-service parameters for the following critical components of the Cohesity cluster:
- Cluster
- Protection Job
- Storage Domain
- View
- Node
- Consumer
- Fan
- Power Supply
- Parent Protected Object
- Protected Object (by environment)
- Parent Protection Runs
- Last Protection Runs
- Protection Run (by environment)
- Parent Restores (common stats)
- Restore (by environment)
- Vault Parent
- Vault
- Tenant
DX UIM provides intelligent analytics, comprehensive coverage, and an open, extensible architecture. By leveraging the solution, teams can reduce tool sprawl, speed mean time to repair, reduce monitoring efforts, accelerate new deployments, and improve the end-user experience. The solution also provides unified, automated monitoring configuration and deployment, making it optimally suited to today’s DevOps and high-scale environments.
